Comprehensive refurbishment of an old house in El Cabañal, Valencia.
From the close collaboration between Cicerone and Viruta Lab comes this unique architectural project, consisting of the comprehensive reform of an old two-storey house located in Calle Progreso.
The sober and elegant design of the project extends throughout the property, perfectly integrating some original architectural elements and classic style details such as the exposed face partition walls, the high ceilings with mouldings or the electrical mechanisms. In contrast, the refurbishment harmoniously includes some modern style elements such as the wall lights or the circular hood in the kitchen. As a tribute to the history of the house and its location in El Cabañal, the choice of floor and wall coverings evokes the typical seafaring atmosphere of old fishermen's houses.
The new layout organises the different spaces intelligently, trying to make the most of the reduced surface area on each of its floors. On the lower level, a cosy living area leads to a simple but elegant kitchen, composed only of base units lacquered in stained oak. Next to the kitchen, a wooden panelling in the same tone subtly integrates the door leading to a complete bathroom.
On the upper level, two double bedrooms with a shared bathroom separating the two spaces make up the floor. The exquisite and meticulous carpentry work on this level deserves a special mention. The two partitions that separate the bathroom from the bedrooms are lined on all sides with a large wooden paneling that houses two original doors from the house, which have been refurbished and adapted to be used as sliding doors. Hidden guides in the ceiling allow the doors to be moved to close the passage from one opening to another as required. A small staircase clad in microcement connects this floor with the roof, where a large terrace allows you to enjoy the Mediterranean climate practically any time of the year.
